FEBRUARY 26, 2013 – Philip Albert, an IP attorney with two decades of experience, has joined the expanding IP practice at Davis Wright Tremaine LLP. Albert joins the firm as a partner in the firm’s San Francisco office.

A former electrical engineer, Albert comes to Davis Wright from Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton, where he has practiced since 1991. He advises clients on intellectual property matters related to electronics, software, and business methods in various technologies, such as computer-generated imagery, digital signal processing, e-commerce technology, cryptology, and wired and wireless networking and protocols. He concentrates his practice on patent prosecution and counseling.

Albert provides patent validity, infringement, and freedom-to-practice opinions, counsels on litigation strategy, and advises on open source issues and the interplay of industry standards and patents.

Prior to practicing law, Albert spent several years as an electrical engineer. He was president and founder of Galt Engineering, Inc., a company that produced semi-custom software and turnkey computer systems for accounting tasks and large bank operations. He also worked for NASA as a design engineer for the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. While at NASA, Albert designed equipment for the Voyager space probe's tracking and digital signal processing hardware and software satellite communications and compression.

Albert has a J.D. from the University of Southern California, where he externed with Judge Alex Kozinski of Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. He has a B.S. in Electrical Engineering - Information Theory from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).
