We support the Call to Action, a nationwide commitment by corporations to increase diversity in the legal profession. Dave Baca, our firmwide managing partner, attended Call to Action’s 2008 invitation-only summit, which convened corporate general counsels and law firm managing partners to create strategies for improving diversity in the profession.
The Call to Action, written in 2004 by Roderick Palmore, general counsel at General Mills, is designed to “encourage corporate attorneys to make an abiding commitment to diversity within their legal departments as well as within the firms with which they work.” More than 100 corporations have signed the Call to Action, many of them clients of ours. By signing the Call to Action, these corporations agree to:
- Make a binding commitment to diversity within their legal departments.
- Actively look for opportunities with law firms that distinguish themselves in diversity issues.
- End relationships with firms whose track record reflects a lack of meaningful interest in diversity.*
“I returned from the Summit even more convinced that we must continue our efforts, and a little chastened—we need to measure, and achieve, improved results,” says Dave Baca. “We are on the right road. Results, not just efforts, will be the measure of success in this arena.”
