Our clients have come to expect the highest level of technical skill, delivered in a collaborative and creative fashion. As a market-leading firm in many areas, we build on our strengths rather than trying to be all things to all people and diluting the value we offer clients. This focus provides our attorneys an excellent platform from which to excel and, for lawyers bringing clients with them, confidence that those clients will be well cared for.
Because the client’s needs and preferences drive the way we work, we look for attorneys who:
- Treat clients and projects as worthy of individualized, customized attention
- Work well on teams
- Focus on understanding and satisfying client needs
- Seek feedback and commit to constant improvement
From day one, we help you get the assignments you need to build your expertise and your practice. And our orientation, lateral integration, and mentoring programs are designed to help you make a smooth transition.
Each fall, we bring all new lateral attorneys and first-year associates together for a three-day orientation program covering firm management, associate policies, law firm economics, time management, practice development, and other topics to help build your practice. This is also a great opportunity to meet colleagues from other offices and practice groups.
Our lateral integration program helps both associates and partners make a smooth transition to the firm. Our mentoring program matches new attorneys with mentors from their practice groups and provides training, professional development plans and scheduled check-ins. A peer liaison is assigned to assist with the day-to-day questions that may arise as you get acclimated to the firm. See the Professional Development
page for more information.
Our partnership track is seven and a half years. Recognizing that individuals develop professionally at different rates, the admission period may be longer or shorter as appropriate.
All equity partners vote on the admission of new partners, based on factors such as integrity, trust, and professional responsibility, client development, production and participation in bar, civic, and charitable organizations.
We will help you effect a smooth transition so there is minimal disruption for you and your clients. Once you are here, we will work proactively to connect you with the right colleagues and firm clients so your clients can be fully and effectively served, and you can take advantage of our platform to expand your practice. We will also connect you with a liaison to acquaint you with firm functions and practices, guide you around the firm, and be a source of institutional knowledge.
, who had built a successful real estate and hospitality practice in San Francisco, recently made the transition from leading his own firm to Davis Wright Tremaine and from San Francisco to Portland. “As far as my clients were concerned, the transition was seamless,” says Steve. “And now that I’m in a large firm, we can serve their needs better.”
You and your clients will benefit from a firmwide focus on client relationship development, including growing client team and client service interview programs and a firmwide initiative to support lawyers in their efforts to strengthen client relationships and align their service with their clients' particular needs and preferences.
The benefits of a good fit
The care we take in ensuring a good professional and personal fit in the lawyers we recruit shows in our turnover statistics: our associate turnover rate is lower than the national average, and our partner turnover rate is an exceptional 2.2 percent per year (compared to about 5.5 percent nationwide).
