History
Davis Wright Tremaine LLP was founded in Seattle in 1908 on a simple guiding principle – to provide clients with quality legal services in a manner that would exceed their expectations. This principle has remained intact for decades as the Seattle office continued to grow and as we began to expand our reach across the nation. By the end of the 1980s, the firm had well-established offices in Anchorage, Bellevue (Wash.), Los Angeles, San Francisco and Washington, D.C.
In 1990, we further cemented ourselves in the Northwest by merging with the well-known Portland (Ore.) law firm of Ragen, Tremaine, Krieger, Schmeer & Neill, and embarked on a program of geographic expansion nationally and internationally. In 1993, we became the first U.S. law firm authorized to establish an office in Shanghai, China, and we joined with the highly regarded communications law firm of Lankenau Kovner & Outten to establish a New York City office in 1998.
In 2007, we bolstered our already strong communications, media and technology practices by merging with the Washington, D.C.-based firm of Cole, Raywid & Braverman. Late in 2008, Davis Wright Tremaine further improved its position in the market by welcoming more than 20 attorneys from the former Heller Ehrman LLP.
Our team currently includes more than 500 attorneys covering a wide variety of practice areas.

Affiliations
In 2008, we expanded our international reach by joining with the Sydney, Australia-based Pacific Legal Network to form DWT Pacific (www.dwtpacific.com), a collaboration that helps us provide legal and business advice to companies around the Pacific Rim.
