James M. Mei
James M. Mei, a partner in the firm's Portland
office, concentrates his practice in the areas of international business
transactions, business law, Chinese joint venture law and business-related
immigration. Mr. Mei chairs Portland's Immigration Law Practice Group.
His representative experience includes:
- Representation of U.S companies in acquiring and setting up
businesses in China.
- Review and assist U.S. companies in drafting equity and contractual
joint ventures documentation with Chinese parties.
- Preparation and review of shareholders agreements and related
business documentation in connection with Chinese parties.
- Representation of clients from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and
Japan in obtaining non-immigrant and immigrant visas through investments.
Prior to coming to the United States, Mr.
Mei was a faculty member at the East China Institute of Politics
and Law. He is the first person from the People's Republic of China
to be admitted to practice law in the State of Oregon.
Mr. Mei is a frequent speaker on China-related
matters for business organizations, both in and outside the legal
profession, including the Oregon State Bar International Section,
Portland State University, and the Northwest Regional China Council.
Since 1986, he has been Co-director of Willamette University College
of Law Summer Program, an ABA-approved Annual Study of Chinese Law
Program in Shanghai.
Mr. Mei is a member of both the Oregon and
Washington State Bars. He is also a member of the American Immigration
Lawyers Association, and the U.S. District Court-Oregon District.
Mr. Mei received his law degree from Willamette
University College of Law and his Bachelor's Degree from Shanghai
University.
