Paula Simon focuses her practice on labor and employment litigation and counseling. Paula defends employers in federal and state courts and before federal, state, and local agencies (EEOC, WSHRH, L&I, SOCR) against a range of claims including discrimination, retaliation, and wage and hour concerns. Paula also supports employers in their labor relationships, providing representation against unfair labor practice charges and in grievance arbitrations. She helps employers avoid and resolve labor disputes through proactive counseling and policy development, including compliance with the Seattle minimum wage ordinance, leave laws, and the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA).

Before her legal career, Paula worked for four years as a television news producer in California and Washington.

McDaniels v. Group Health Cooperative

Secured summary judgment in wrongful termination case asserting state and federal claims including race, age, and disability discrimination, harassment, failure to accommodate, FMLA interference, wrongful discharge in violation of public policy, and negligent supervision. (W.D. Wash. 2014)

Resolution of single and multi-plaintiff lawsuits in federal and state courts

Resolved multiple lawsuits involving claims of unlawful discrimination and retaliation under Title VII, WLAD, ADA, and FMLA.

Discipline grievance arbitration

Represented employer in discipline grievance arbitration that resulted in arbitrator finding just cause for discipline and denying grievance in its entirety. (2014)

Virginia Mason Hospital & Medical Center

Defended hospital’s right to require face masks for nurses who refuse flu vaccinations under an infection control policy, ending an eight-year dispute between Virginia Mason and Washington State Nurses Association. (2012)
