Christopher Avery, CIPP/US, counsels on a broad range of privacy and security matters. He advises clients on U.S. and international privacy laws and regulations pertaining to consumer privacy, employee privacy, data security, and cybersecurity. Previously the director and senior counsel of privacy and regulatory at Charter Communications, Christopher draws on nearly a decade of experience to serve the needs of clients both nationwide and abroad.

Christopher is also part of DWT’s Breach Response Team (dwt.com/IncidentResponse).

Practice Highlights
  • Consumer and employee privacy: Served as lead counsel and provided guidance and operational support on domestic and international laws, regulations, industry standards, and best practices related to consumer and employee privacy.
  • Incident response: Facilitated development, implementation, and testing of companywide incident response plan; led internal investigations and managed incident response activities for all incidents related to the unauthorized or inadvertent disclosure of consumer, employee, or company information; and acted as a liaison between federal, state, and local law enforcement.
  • Data security and cybersecurity: Helped company implement and maintain comprehensive data security programs and related polices, including initial risk assessment and remediation activities, and the development of practices and procedures related to the collection, retention, transfer, and destruction of sensitive data. Provided legal counsel regarding NIST’s Framework for Improving Critical Infrastructure Cybersecurity and incident response for cyber events.
  • Law enforcement and national security: Managed dedicated team that was responsible for responding to all law enforcement and civil requests for customer information, supported company’s compliance with lawful intercept orders, and acted as primary point of contact for all national security matters.
  • Advanced and behavioral advertising: Helped company develop interactive and behavioral advertising programs across online and mobile platforms, and other big data monetization and licensing initiatives.
  • Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS): Assisted business and technology teams with understanding and complying with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS); contact negotiations with acquiring bank and PCI service providers; and implementation of internal security assessment program and multiple successful reports on compliance.
