Gillian Murphy focuses her practice on employment advice and counsel. She helps employers of all sizes successfully navigate every aspect of the employment relationship, including compliance with leave and disability law, discrimination investigations, updating personnel policies, and drafting executive compensation agreements. As a member of DWT’s Pay Equity Task Force, Gillian guides employers through compensation analyses and performs job classification audits to ensure compliance with state and federal law. Gillian frequently assists DWT’s mergers and acquisitions team with due diligence and other employment issues that may arise in connection with asset and stock purchases. She regularly conducts management training programs on a range of employment topics and is known for her energetic presentation style. While Gillian serves employers across all industries, she has particular expertise in the restaurant and hotel space.

Compensation and pay practices audits

Conducting audits of compensation and tip pooling practices for multiple restaurant and other clients. (Ongoing)

Providing ongoing advice to multiple employers on situations involving employees with performance problems compounded by complicated disability accommodation issues. Ensuring employers achieve goals with minimal disruption to the work environment and minimal legal exposure. (Ongoing)

Management training

Conducting management training programs for multiple clients in industries ranging from restaurants and night clubs to architecture and technology firms on the topics of hiring, discrimination law, harassment, effective performance feedback, wage and hour, and compliance with FMLA and leave laws. Nationwide counsel on personnel policies

Assisting national companies with the creation and implementation of personnel policies that comply with the applicable law in all 50 states and multiple municipalities. (Ongoing)

Beem v. Providence Health & Services, Inc.

Participated in representation of large medical institution in wrongful termination case involving allegations of failure to accommodate under the ADA and WLAD. Verdict for employer after federal jury trial. (E.D. Wash. 2012)

Arbitration for national restaurant chain

Successfully obtained full judgment for national restaurant chain at arbitration against employee's extensive sexual harassment and retaliation claims. (2010)

Munday v. Western Peterbilt, Inc.

Obtained summary judgment for large transportation company on all claims in a sexual harassment and retaliation case. (2009)

Race and national origin discrimination case for local luxury hotel

Successfully defeated six related EEOC charges against local luxury hotel alleging race and national origin discrimination, which included representing client throughout lengthy investigation and EEOC interview process. (2007)
