Robert Stankey


Bob Stankey focuses on global communications, technology and privacy law for U.S. and European clients. As a former senior in-house lawyer with AOL Europe and former general counsel for an international telecommunications provider, he has extensive practical experience with commercial and regulatory legal issues for clients in the telecommunications, information technology and media sectors. Bob has practiced in London for more than nine years and advises on U.K. law and other European national laws as well as EU policy-making in Brussels.

Advising on communications regulatory, privacy, and law enforcement assistance obligations in more than 85 countries related to the launch of cloud-based unified communications services for organizations and businesses. (Ongoing)

Communications data retention for Internet service providers

Advising on European Union legislation revising requirements for Internet services providers to retain communications traffic data for use in law enforcement and national security investigations in Europe. (Ongoing)

European data protection for global business media & events company

Advise on European data protection compliance for client’s marketing communications & lead generation activities, use of website cookies and privacy policies. (Ongoing)

Cloud based privacy compliance for leading technology company

Advised on compliance obligations under selected European, Asian and Middle Eastern privacy laws with respect to the international launch of cloud-based collaboration services. (2011)

Digital content distribution for GameDay Entertainment, LLC

Represented GameDay in negotiations with the National Football League and 12 NFL teams to provide football fans with a new in-stadium interactive TV service called FanVision, which offers alternative camera angles, instant replay, statistics and other game-related features on a special-purpose handheld TV. (2010)

Digital distribution and privacy compliance for online content provider

Advised on distribution of smartphone app and European privacy compliance for an online specialty magazine and auction site. (2010)

Digital media service licensing, distribution and regulatory arrangements for Kangaroo Media

Represented the provider of the Kangaroo TV handheld interactive television service at Formula One races worldwide in its commercial distribution, sponsorship and content licensing arrangements and in securing broadcast licenses for its operations at F1 races in Europe. (2010)

EU Audiovisual Media Services Directive for several Internet companies*

Advised clients on the potential application of the U.K.'s implementation of the EU Audiovisual Media Services Directive to content services delivered over the Internet. (2010)

Open source software services agreement for privately held software services company*

Drafted agreement to become the exclusive provider of software development and maintenance services for a widely used software application distributed under a French copyleft software license. (2010)

European communications policy-making for several online companies*

Advised companies on a range of communications policy and compliance issues in Europe, including the recently completed review of its electronic communications regulatory framework, the regulation of VoIP services, incentives for the creation of next-generation high-speed data networks and net neutrality/broadband access rights. This work involved regular advocacy before policy makers in Brussels and key national regulators, such as the U.K.'s Office of Communications. (2009)
