Our Washington, D.C. office is ideally situated
to assist with legal issues arising in connection with international
trade and legislative policy with respect to Canada. Canadian clients

Range of Services Offered
Foreign
Investment
The department serves both foreign clients in the United States and
United States clients abroad in connection with the formation and
operation of branches, subsidiaries and joint ventures. For example,
we represent foreign clients in their U.S. real estate and fisheries
projects, and U.S. clients in connection with their ventures abroad.
International Financing
The firm works with numerous domestic and foreign banks and was active
in the drafting and promotion of the Alien Bank Law of Washington
State.
Trade
Our lawyers represent both the United States and foreign clients in
connection with legal issues arising in international trade, including
export licenses, shipment disputes, anti-dumping and other unfair
trade practice proceedings, the formation of export trading companies
and shipping documentation problems.
International
Tax
Every international transaction raises tax issues, usually involving
more than one jurisdiction. Our firm represents United States clients
in connection with the United States tax aspects of foreign activities,
as well as foreign clients in connection with the tax aspects of their
activities or investments in the United States.
Maritime
Lawyers of Davis Wright Tremaine's International Department act as
counsel to American and foreign fishing companies, associations of
fishermen, maritime service companies and financial institutions that
serve the maritime industry. By virtue of the firm's offices in Seattle,
Portland, Anchorage and Washington, D.C., Davis Wright Tremaine provides
legal services to the maritime industry on a nationwide basis, emphasizing
the Pacific Region. Our services include admiralty litigation, maritime
mortgages, vessel financing, taxation, vessel sale and documentation,
government regulations and representation before Congress on changes
in federal law affecting the maritime industry. We represent a shipowner and its insurer in
a major oil pollution case, involving litigation in Canada and the
United States.
High Technology
We represent both domestic and foreign clients in connection with
the negotiation and licensing of intellectual property rights in the
context of joint ventures and otherwise. Our particular emphasis is
on the licensing of computer software, both domestically and internationally.
Immigration
The International Department includes lawyers experienced in the area
of immigration law. Our immigration practice focuses on employment-related
immigrant and nonimmigrant visas for foreign investors and foreign
and domestic companies that employ aliens.
Litigation
Our lawyers represent foreign and domestic clients in international
litigation and work with lawyers in Asia, Europe and Canada in connection
with such litigation. Such litigation frequently involves issues of
jurisdiction and conflicts of law.
