Joanne Montague’s presentation included a brief discussion of the definition of OSS, business models that use OSS, and ways that OSS is brought (knowingly and unknowingly) into companies. She covered the different categories of OSS licenses that one should be aware of and the ramifications of the three main types (permissive, stronger copyleft, and weaker copyleft) as well as the situations in which legal issues regarding OSS may arise. Finally, she discussed enforcement objectives of proponents of OSS, past enforcement actions, and strategies for dealing with an enforcement action, should it arise.
