In rankings released recently by the World Trademark Review, Davis Wright Tremaine LLP was recognized as one of the leading firms in the country in trademark law. Individual DWT attorneys and offices were also honored in the annual ranking, known as the “WTR 1000,” the only ranking to focus exclusively on trademark practices and practitioners.
Davis Wright was one of just 26 firms nationwide that placed in the WTR rankings at the national level.

The rankings, based on four months of research, recognize firms based on factors such as depth of expertise, market presence, and the level of work on which they are typically engaged. Individuals are listed in the publication based on substantial positive feedback WTR researchers receive about them in interviews with clients and fellow attorneys.
The publication nationally recognized New York partner Roxanne Elings for Anti-Counterfeiting as well as for Prosecution and Strategy, categories where she received a Gold ranking. She also was nationally recognized for Enforcement and Litigation, where she received a Silver ranking.
In addition to its national rankings, Davis Wright received recognition regionally for its Washington, Oregon, and New York offices.
Davis Wright was one of just two firms to receive the Gold ranking in Washington. WTR praised the team, saying: “A skilled cadre of specialists, streamlined capabilities and a broad firm network make full-service outfit Davis Wright Tremaine ‘a fantastic choice on any trademark assignment’. The ‘extremely competent, thoughtful and accommodating’ Washington branch is entrusted with the full spectrum of instructions for a global clientele.”
WTR listed Cindy Caditz individually, saying the “prosecution-focused” attorney “wins plaudits for delivering ‘well-rounded knowledge and top-notch results’ to a heavyweight client list.” WTR identified two other DWT Washington attorneys, stating: “Non-contentious briefs are also at the heart of the ‘excellent’ Marshall Nelson’s practice; he combines his trademark and advertising law aptitude to aid rights holders in the healthcare and media industries, among others. On the litigation front, ‘superb adviser’ Stuart Dunwoody is singled out for his smart management of hotly contested clashes.”
Davis Wright’s New York office received a Bronze ranking for Enforcement and Litigation, and Prosecution and Strategy. The publication commented, with regard to the New York office, that “Davis Wright Tremaine has a flourishing reputation in the trademark field. Its worldwide prominence and strength in the adjacent practice areas of media and advertising law prove particularly advantageous.”
The publication described Nicholson, who was individually ranked in New York for Prosecution and Strategy, as “an eminent market figure with deep familiarity of branding needs in the publishing and entertainment sectors.” Elings was individually ranked in New York for Prosecution and Strategy and for Enforcement and Litigation, and was described as “famed for her cutting-edge anti-counterfeiting work, including large-scale shutdowns in the online space.”
WTR listed Davis Wright’s Oregon office, saying the attorneys “draw judiciously on the wider team’s expertise to provide clients with nuanced, savvy counsel.” Researchers singled out Sheila Fox Morrison, saying she “shines especially brightly in her food and beverage focus area. ‘She is a fantastic lateral thinker who gamely tackles some of the unusual questions which arise in the sector.’ Peers also admire her polished dispute resolution skills and ‘measured handling of hotly contested issues’.”
This is the second year the firm has been recognized by WTR 1000. Davis Wright was also recently ranked among the top three firms in the country in IP litigation in a survey of outside counsel to Fortune 500 companies by Corporate Counsel magazine.
