JULY 11, 2017 – Davis Wright Tremaine, home to one of the country’s preeminent communications and cable practice groups, has expanded with the addition of Cristina Chou, a lawyer with two decades’ experience in government, in-house, and private practice. Ms. Chou joins as a partner in the firm’s Washington, D.C., office.

Ms. Chou was most recently Vice President of Regulatory Affairs at Time Warner Cable, which was the country’s second-largest cable provider before being acquired by Charter Communications last year. She previously served at the Federal Communications Commission as legal advisor to Commissioner Robert McDowell and as Associate Bureau Chief of the FCC’s Media Bureau, which regulates multichannel video services and broadcast radio and television.

“Cristina is held in extremely high regard by players on all sides of the cable industry,” said Danielle Frappier, chair of the Communications practice group at Davis Wright Tremaine. “She has a 360-degree view into the regulatory, technical, and policy concerns that are top-of-mind not just for our cable clients but for the many tech, telecom, and media companies we serve. She’s going to be a tremendous source of growth for our firm.”

The lawyers of Davis Wright Tremaine have decades of experience representing the cable industry—including major and smaller cable operators, NCTA, and CableLabs—on a broad range of federal and state regulatory, litigation, and transactional matters. The team has been widely recognized for excellence:

  • U.S. News and Best Lawyers named Davis Wright Tremaine “Law Firm of the Year” in Communications two years running (2015 and 2016).
  • The closely followed industry trade publication Cablefax recognized three attorneys from Davis Wright Tremaine this year on its inaugural list of “Top Lawyers in TV,” more than any other firm.
  • The latest Chambers USA guide ranked the firm among the country’s top practitioners of Telecom, Broadcast, and Satellite law.

“Davis Wright Tremaine’s team includes some of the foremost legal counselors on issues such as the intersection of cable technology with U.S. regulatory policy,” said Ms. Chou. “I look forward to bringing my industry and FCC experience to this remarkable group and to assisting our clients with emerging challenges, such as privacy and information security—another area where Davis Wright has carved out a leading position.”

During her eight years at Time Warner Cable, Ms. Chou developed and advocated legal and policy positions before the FCC and provided regulatory expertise to senior management on a wide range of matters affecting the company’s video business. At the FCC, she provided counsel on significant regulatory and policy issues and prepared testimony for Congressional hearings. She is a sought-after speaker for industry events.

Earlier in her career, Ms. Chou served as a telecommunications analyst at the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) of the U.S. Department of Commerce. She was also senior in-house counsel at a multinational telecommunications company and a lawyer in the communications group at Morrison & Foerster. She formerly practiced under the name Cristina Pauzé.

Ms. Chou received her B.A. from Duke University and her J.D. from Vanderbilt University School of Law.
