"New Challenges: From Concept to Operations," 9th Academic Medical Center Conference on Security and Privacy, Chapel Hill, N.C.
Adam Greene presented two session on May 6, 2013, at the 9th AMC Conference on Security and Privacy in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Long-Term Future of Health Privacy and Security: Why It Matters to You Now
Most of us spend our time operating security and privacy programs and planning one year or so out. What is likely to happen to the size and shape of these programs in the longer term -- say five years? The growth of health systems (and the corresponding shrinkage of small medical practices), the shift towards consumer/patient involvement that involves health information usage, pushes for a general set of rights for people in the gathering and use of their data, and the growth of the amount of data in use in healthcare (big data) are but a few emerging trends that point to shifts in the size and shape of privacy and security programs. Some potential changes argue for actions this year to prepare for or hedge these shifts. Come to hear what our panel has to say about the long term in this area and add in your own comments.
Session objective:
- State at least three long-term trends that are likely to affect privacy and security programs for AMCs.

Update on OCR Audits for HIPAA Security and Privacy Rule Compliance
With a year's worth of contracted auditing experience in the rear view mirror, we've learned a thing or two about how the government is going about the business of HIPAA security and privacy auditing. This session will cover objectives, audit protocol and process, findings, observations, recommendations and national trends. A couple of recent case studies will ground these topics in reality.
Session objectives:
- Identify potential gaps in security and privacy programs
- Develop a course of action for enforcement preparedness
- Describe enforcement outcomes and trends
