FEBRUARY 23, 2016 – Mark A. Hutcheson, a veteran labor and employment law attorney and senior partner at Davis Wright Tremaine LLP, has been named a winner of the 2016 Charles A. Goldmark Distinguished Service Award by the Legal Foundation of Washington (LFW).
Hutcheson will be recognized, along with the other honorees, at LFW’s annual Goldmark Luncheon on February 26th at the Sheraton in downtown Seattle. Keynote speaker at the event will be Paulette Brown, president of the American Bar Association. The luncheon is traditionally attended by over 500 attorneys, judges, and community leaders.
The Distinguished Service Award is presented annually to an outstanding individual or organization that has assisted in providing deep and meaningful access to the justice system. The award commemorates the extraordinary contributions of attorney Charles A. Goldmark, who helped establish a more just, equitable legal aid system in Washington state during his lifetime.
Hutcheson has been championing that legal aid network throughout his long career at Davis Wright Tremaine. While serving as counsel to Evergreen Legal Services in the 1980s, he witnessed how funding cuts jeopardized the availability of legal aid to low-income populations. In response, he helped found and raise the seed money for Legal Aid for Washington Fund (LAW Fund), a unified fundraising program for the state’s legal programs, and has served as a founder and president of the Endowment for Equal Justice, which has grown to become the largest endowment for civil legal aid in the country.
Hutcheson has also played active leadership roles at the American Bar Association, the King County Bar Association, and the American Hospital Association. He is frequently named among the top employment lawyers in the country and in 2010 received the Washington State Bar Association’s President’s Award. He has been recognized for excellence by all of the leading lawyer ranking organizations—Chambers, Best Lawyers, and Super Lawyers—and has been elected a Fellow of the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers, one of the highest peer recognitions in the field.
Davis Wright Tremaine congratulates the other two recipients of this year’s Distinguished Service award: J. David Andrews of Perkins Coie and the Honorable Ronald J. Horowitz. The firm is pleased to be a sponsor of the Goldmark luncheon and to have partner John Goldmark, the nephew of Charles, represent our firm as a member of LFW’s board.
