NOV. 7, 2022  – Michael Chase, an energy attorney with more than two decades of experience in government, private practice, and industry, has joined the national energy industry team at Davis Wright Tremaine LLP in Washington, D.C.

Chase comes to the firm from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, where he spent 7+ years in the Office of General Counsel. He was previously an attorney with the energy-focused firm Van Ness Feldman LLP, representing power industry participants in commercial matters and proceedings before FERC, other federal agencies, and federal courts.

"Mike's knowledge of the inner workings of FERC will greatly enhance our ability to effectively represent clients before this critical agency," said Vidhya Prabhakaran, co-chair of the energy practice group at Davis Wright. "His experience handling matters in the Southeastern U.S. will expand our geographic range as well."

Chase is the second major addition to Davis Wright's energy team in the past two months. Previously, Jon Trotta arrived as a partner from Stinson LLP, where he spent a dozen years representing gas and electric utilities, industry trade associations, renewable project developers, and transportation industry clients in transactional matters and regulatory proceedings.

Together, Chase and Trotta add depth to a prominent Davis Wright energy team in D.C. that includes experienced partners Barbara Jost, Sean Atkins, and Michael Kunselman, and longtime FERC executive Andrea Wolfman, former leader of the agency's enforcement office.

"This is an extraordinary group, and I'm very excited to join them," said Chase. "The energy industry is in a state of significant transition, and Davis Wright is doing an outstanding job helping clients navigate the sometimes-winding regulatory path to success."

During his time at FERC, Chase reviewed applications and other requests filed by regulated utilities and market participants, drafted Notices of Proposed Rulemakings and final rules concerning transmission development and changes to FERC procedures, and served as the lead attorney reviewing electricity standards proposed by the North American Energy Standards Board.

Earlier in his career, Chase was an associate at both Greenberg Traurig LLP and Morrison Foerster LLP. During law school, he served as Federal Agency Affairs Representative for one of North America's largest natural gas producers.

Chase received his B.A. from Johns Hopkins University and his J.D. from the George Washington University School of Law.
