Ronnie London helps clients resist and challenge government intrusion on speech and to navigate the regulatory frameworks they encounter. Through litigation and compliance-counseling, Ronnie guides clients such as online and traditional media, service-providers and advertisers through strategic advice on a broad range of litigation, administrative, enforcement and legislative matters affecting the media, communications, and all aspects of consumer privacy.

He works with a wide range of companies to evaluate and address free-speech, freedom-of-information, and privacy issues, with a strategic approach geared toward practical outcomes, and where necessary, assists in risk-based decision-making. This includes bringing his constitutional and administrative law expertise to bear to defend clients from government over-reach and private suits targeting the exercise of the rights to free speech, press and expression.

Practice Highlights

Litigating in defense of the First Amendment and against the administrative state

Mounting challenges to governmental regulation of the media, advertisers, and all members of the university and college campus community. Regularly serving as counsel on amicus briefs in the Supreme Court and other appellate tribunals. Bringing Freedom of Information Act cases to secure access to government records to which the public and press are entitled. Expertise includes counseling on compliance with rules governing regulable content.

“Alphabet Soup” compliance for consumer interactions

Working with in-house counsel and business units to guide compliance under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA), Telemarketing Sales Rule (TSR), Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography And Marketing Act (CAN-SPAM), Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), and Junk Fax Protection Act. Experienced with advising on “Title III” issues under the Wiretap Act, Stored Communications Act (SCA), Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA), and Video Privacy Protection Act (VPPA), as well as the privacy protections of the Cable Communications Policy Act. Compliance advice includes issue- or campaign-specific questions and stem-to-stern audits of business operations to develop enterprisewide compliance strategies.

Litigation in the public interest

Pro bono efforts include successful First Amendment and FOIA cases involving the right to film police in public, access to courthouses by individual members of the public, and gaining access to records critical to veterans advocating change in VA and Air Force Agent Orange policy, and to shining light on public funds spent to settle claims against the federal prison system.
