Peter J. Anderson has over three decades of experience in copyright and entertainment litigation. He has represented record labels, music publishers, recording and performing artists and others in a range of intellectual property matters, including copyright infringement, breach of contract, unfair competition, and trademark matters.

Representative Experience

Daisley v. Blizzard Music Ltd.*

Lead counsel for the defendants in breach of contract and fraud action against Ozzy Osbourne and his music publisher, brought by former band member. Obtained the dismissal of the plaintiff’s action. (US), No. 217CV01500CASAS, 2017 WL 1628399 (C.D. Cal. 2017)

Hall v. Swift*

Representing Taylor Swift and the other defendants in a copyright infringement case.  Obtained dismissal pursuant to Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 12(b)(6) and presently defending the plaintiffs’ appeal before the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. No. 2:17−cv−06882 MWF (ASx) (C.D. Cal. Ongoing)

Skidmore v. Led Zeppelin*

Lead counsel for the defendants in copyright infringement case involving "Stairway to Heaven," including the successful transfer of that action to the Central District of California from the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, and lead counsel at trial in June 2016. Barnes v. Sony Music Entm't Inc.*

Defended the defendants in an action for tortious interference brought by a publicist in California State Court and which Peter removed to federal court and t hen obtained summary judgment in defendants’ favor. 2016 WL 1367701 (C.D. Cal. 2016)

Morrill v. Stefani*

Defended Gwen Stefani, Pharrell Williams, and UMG Recordings, Inc., in a copyright infringement case, obtaining summary judgment in their favor.  (C.D. Cal. 2016)

Unichappell Music, Inc. v. Modrock Prods., LLC*

Represented Unichappell Music, Inc. and Warner/Chappell Music Inc. in a music copyright infringement action against the producer of a musical stage lay, obtaining summary judgment on the producer’s counterclaims and partial summary judgment on its defenses, resulting in a stipulated judgment against the producer and in favor of Unichappell Music, Inc. on its infringement claim. Seltzer v. Green Day*

Defended the musical group Green Day and their record company, Warner Bros. Records, in a copyright infringement and Lanham Act action regarding street art used in a video backdrop for concert performances, obtaining summary judgment in their favor based on the fair use defense, affirmed on appeal.  725 F.3d 1170 (9th Cir. 2013)

Stewart v. First California Bank*

Defended Sony Music Entertainment in a breach of contract and fraud action brought by recording artist Sly Stone, obtaining judgment at the pleading level, affirmed on appeal. No. B236286, 2013 WL 2352519 (Cal. Ct. App. 2013)

VMG Salsoul v. Ciccione*

Counsel for defendants Warner Bros. Records Inc. and Warner Music Group Corp. in the district court in a copyright infringement action regarding the Madonna song "Vogue," in which summary judgment was obtained, aff’d in part, vacated in part, 824 F.3d 871. No. 2:12-CV-5967-SVW-FMO, 2013 WL 12136515 (C.D. Cal. 2013)

Tierney v. Image Entm’t, Inc.*

Represented the plaintiff in a copyright infringement and breach of contract action involving the television series "Naked City." Obtained summary judgment for willful copyright infringement, resulting in $9 million in potential statutory damages and the settlement of the action. No. CV111305DSFAJWX, 2012 WL 13008214 (C.D. Cal. 2012)

Tierney v. Image Entm’t, Inc.*

Represented the plaintiff in a copyright infringement and breach of contract action involving the television series "Naked City." King v. Najm*

Defended the recording artist T-Pain, Sony BMG Entertainment and others in a music copyright infringement action, obtaining summary judgment in their favor. No. CV084164DSFVBKX, 2011 WL 13186238 (C.D. Cal. 2011)

Biller v. Peter Rodgers Org.*

Represented the plaintiff in a copyright infringement action regarding the movie "Richard Pryor Live in Concert," obtaining summary judgment as to the defendants’ liability and, after a bench trial as to remedies, successfully defended the defendant’s appeal and successfully prosecuted the plaintiff’s cross-appeal as to the district court’s evidentiary ruling as to the defendant’s profits, resulting in a seven-figure recovery on remand. 281 Fed. Appx. 659 (9th Cir. 2008)

Jones v. Moore*

Defended the recording artist Pink, her company, and Zomba Label Group, obtaining dismissal in their favor. No. CV 07-7816 PA (JTLX), 2008 WL 11343072 (C.D. Cal. 2008)

Lucasfilm Ltd. v. Shepperton Design Studios Ltd.*

Represented Lucasfilm Ltd. in a copyright, unfair competition, and trademark case, obtaining a default judgment for $20 million. No. CV05-3434 RGK MANX, 2006 WL 6672241 (C.D. Cal. 2006)

Lite Breeze, Inc. v. Spears*

Successfully defended Britney Spears, Zomba Recording Corp. and others in a trademark case, obtaining summary judgment in their favor. 04CV0326 (S.D. Cal. 2005)

Brod v. Collins*

Successfully defended the author of a book in a copyright infringement action regarding photographs in the book, obtaining summary judgment in the author’s favor and affirmance on appeal. 32 Fed. Appx. 231 (9th Cir. 2002)

Woods v. Universal City Studios, Inc.*

Lead counsel for the plaintiff in a copyright infringement action regarding the plaintiff’s artwork, obtaining a preliminary injunction against the distribution of the theatrical motion picture "12 Monkeys," resulting in a settlement. 920 F. Supp. 62 (S.D.N.Y. 1996)
