Meredith Santana advocates for content creators in First Amendment and intellectual property disputes in and out of court. Meredith has represented online publications, television networks, authors, publishing companies, and songwriters against claims of defamation, invasion of privacy, and copyright infringement.
The core of Meredith’s litigation practice is representing media and other companies and individuals against libel claims in state and federal courts across the U.S. Recently, Meredith has represented Viacom against a defamation claim involving the made-for-television biopic CrazySexyCool; Simon & Schuster, Tiffany Haddish, and Tucker Max in a defamation suit relating to Haddish’s memoir The Last Black Unicorn; and, HarperCollins Publishers and author Laura Kipnis against defamation and invasion of privacy claims arising from the book Unwanted Advances: Sexual Paranoia Comes to Campus.
Another core aspect of Meredith’s practice is defending against copyright infringement claims, working closely with clients to find fast, cost-effective resolutions to such disputes. Meredith currently represents Miley Cyrus and Sony Music Entertainment in a suit alleging infringement of a copyright in a musical composition. Previously, a substantial portion of Meredith’s practice focused on music licensing litigation, including representing satellite radio and music streaming services in rate-setting proceedings before the Copyright Royalty Board.
