SEPTEMBER 25, 2012 – Davis Wright Tremaine LLP has been honored with the 2012 James Madison Award by the Washington Coalition for Open Government (WCOG). The award was given at the organization’s annual breakfast last Friday in Seattle.

The James Madison Award is given to an individual or organization "whose long-term commitment to the cause of open government has been demonstrated through exemplary words or deeds." WCOG called Davis Wright "a vigorous advocate for open government for more than 40 years," and noted the firm’s work "arguing many landmark cases on behalf of the public's right to know."

The award is named after James Madison, fourth president of the United States and one of the primary authors of the Constitution and Bill of Rights.

"We're very pleased to be recognized by such a valuable organization," said DWT partner Eric M. Stahl, who serves on the WCOG board. "We look forward to continuing to contribute to its vital mission."

Davis Wright represents many of the largest news media outlets in Washington state and around the country, as well as individual journalists and private citizens seeking access to public information. The firm’s attorneys have litigated many of the leading cases that hold courts and agencies accountable and that assure the right of the press to keep the public informed. Its attorneys have also been active on the legislative front, drafting statutes that protect the right to speak out on issues of public importance (the "anti-SLAPP" law) and a reporter "shield law" that enhances the news media’s ability to report public information.

DWT has been an active supporter of WCOG since its formation. DWT attorneys have served on the WCOG board since its incorporation in 2002, and the firm provides ongoing support to its legal efforts.

The firm continues to be a leader in First Amendment and media law nationwide.
