Entry-Level Associate FAQs

How soon can I expect to hear feedback after the interviews are completed?

The timing of feedback can vary. The Recruiting Team will keep you updated.

Does DWT have a lock-step or merit-based system of advancement?

Our advancement system is merit-based. Associates are evaluated annually at year-end.

What is the annual billable hours expectation at DWT?

1,850 billable hours expectation.

How many references are required and when will they be contacted?

We require 2-3 references. One must be a current or direct supervisor, and the other two can be supervisors who can speak to your work from previous employers. Once an offer is extended, we'll seek your permission to contact the supervisor(s) from previous employers as soon as we can. Once the offer is accepted and notice is given, we will contact the current employer reference.

What documents are needed to complete my application?

We require a cover letter, a resume, a copy of the law school transcript, and a brief writing sample or a deal sheet (depending on practice area).

Do all of the documents need to be provided prior to scheduling an interview?

Initially having the cover letter, resume, and law school transcript is enough at the review stage, but we would require the writing sample (or deal sheet) prior to scheduling an interview.

What should I expect of the interview process?

For our associate candidates, our interview process consists of the following stages:

  • Initial Interview: Meet with 1-2 attorneys at a DWT office, if possible; other accommodations will be made if necessary. This initial meeting typically takes an hour.
  • Full Round Interviews: Visit a DWT office to meet with 4-6 additional attorneys (a mix of partners and associates) including, when possible, the Practice Group Chair and Partner-in-Charge. These meetings generally take 3-4 hours.
  • Additional Interviews: In some cases, when key attorneys are not available during the Full Round, we may ask a candidate to come back for additional interviews to meet those key people.
  • Next Steps: If an offer is being considered, we collect references and a list of the candidate's clients/matters to start a conflicts check.

What is the dress code for interviews at DWT?

The dress code for interviews is business professional.

If a lunch interview is scheduled, who do I contact about dietary restrictions or preferences?

We are happy to accommodate special needs as you may require. Please talk with your Recruiting Department contact to discuss these requests.

What types of benefits does DWT provide?

Is pro bono work available at the associate level?

After you meet your client billable hours expectation, work billed on qualified pro bono matters will be counted toward your hours for bonus purposes, up to a maximum of 8%. Similarly, hours worked on eligible Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion activities, up to 3% of the annual billable hours expectation, will be considered for bonus purposes.

As a 2L Patent Prosecution Scholarship recipient, you will receive $15,000 for your third year tuition and expenses. You will also work in a paid Summer Associate position with the Patent Prosecution team in our Seattle office.

DWT accepts applications for 2L Summer Associate opportunities during the summer between 1L and 2L year. We plan to participate in the following OCIs and career fairs but also encourage all OCI and fair applicants to apply directly through our system as well.

Application and Interview FAQs

Which offices participate in the Summer Associate programs?

We will have summer associates in many of our offices. Check the Careers page for available opportunities.

How does the interview process work?

  • Initial: A candidate will meet with one or two people via a video interview. The interview can take up to an hour.
  • Callbacks/Second Round: A candidate will meet with 6-8 of our attorneys via a video interview. Interviews may last up to 4 hours in length with a few breaks in between.

What should I wear to my interviews?

The dress code for interviews is business professional, though attorneys with whom you meet may be dressed more casually. Once you are a summer associate, we adhere to business casual.

When and how do I apply for a summer associate position?

1Ls: We accept applications for our 1L Diversity Scholarships via our website beginning December 1. Emailed applications are not accepted. The application submission preference date is in early January and applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. The offices hiring 1Ls vary by year. Check the position listings in early December for availability.

2Ls: We accept applications for 2L Summer Associate positions starting in the spring. Positions will remain on the website until they are filled. Submissions received before the listed submission date will receive preference. We also accept applications via career fairs and On-Campus Interview programs at the fairs and schools listed above. If you are applying through a fair or OCI, we ask that you also submit your application via our website. We are not able to visit every law school for OCI so, if DWT seems to be a good fit for you, we encourage you to apply online (emailed applications are not accepted). Typically, half of our summer class is made up of students who have sought us out directly.

When will I hear from DWT after I apply?

It depends on the opportunity, but we strive to notify students regarding their status as soon as possible.

1L: Diversity Scholarship applications are reviewed as we receive them in December and early January but candidates may not be contacted for interviews immediately given holiday schedules. We anticipate 1L Diversity Scholarship interviews will take place in January, though some initial interviews could be conducted earlier.

2L: Summer Associate applications are reviewed beginning in mid-May and we conduct initial interviews and second round "callback" interviews on a rolling basis until all positions have filled. The Hiring Committee makes every effort to contact candidates soon after the callback interview with an update on their candidacy. The committee meets on a regular basis during the recruitment season, but because we have a high volume of applicants, the wait time can be up to three weeks during interview season. If you have completed the second round of interviews, we welcome periodic check-ins on the status of your candidacy. We strongly encourage you to keep us informed of any timelines for offers you may receive while you are being considered by us.

What are you looking for in a summer associate candidate?

We seek law students who are committed to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive legal profession. Our culture is special, and we want to find the next generation of lawyers who will carry on our commitment to fostering a firm environment that reflects what we value. We want people who will be active in our communities, both inside and outside of the firm. We value the ability to bring creativity and unique ideas to your work while taking an entrepreneurial approach to your career. We believe students who excel in written and oral communication and prioritize collaboration and professional responsibility will be successful. If you are someone who can learn and bounce back from your mistakes and value thoughtful feedback, DWT is the right place for you.

If I am selected for a Diversity Scholarship, when will I receive the award?

Diversity scholarships are issued at the end of your summer commitment with us.

Summer Program FAQs

What is the length of the summer program?

The summer program is typically 10 weeks and runs from June to August. Exact start and end dates will be shared with the summer class in the spring.

Can I split my summer with another firm?

In order to give you the best possible summer experience, we do not recommend splitting your summer with another firm.

Will I have a mentor, a legal assistant, and an office?

We will assign an associate mentor, a partner mentor, and a legal assistant to you over the summer. You will also have an office or dedicated workspace. Some of our locations are nearing capacity, so we ask for your flexibility as we may need to reserve temporary office space for you during the summer.

What kind of work will I receive?

We do not have a rotation system to distribute projects. You are able to take any work that is available in your office. We pride ourselves on offering you opportunities that give a real glimpse of what it is like to practice at DWT. Typical assignments available for pickup through our work allocation system or directly from attorneys include researching legal issues, drafting memoranda containing legal analysis, drafting legal documents (motions, briefs, contracts, etc.), and assisting with pro bono projects. When available, you can also assist with and attend client meetings, hearings, depositions, negotiations, and trials.

What kind of training will there be?

The training you will receive through the Summer Associate program will be impactful. You will gain exposure to each practice group and attend litigation writing and transactional drafting seminars. In addition to having access to these sessions, your mentors and the attorneys serving as Summer Associate Program Coordinators are available to you. Summer associates are invited to attend various training programs delivered by our Professional Development department and training and meetings hosted by the practice and industry groups. And of course, you will also earn a great deal of on-the-job training by collaborating in small client teams doing real work and getting real feedback.

What kind of summer associate events do you offer?

Each summer, we host all of the firm's summer associates in Seattle for a Summer Associate Retreat during which we introduce you to firm leaders, give you space to engage with your new colleagues, and build community through dinners, receptions, and more. Social events outside of the retreat vary by office and have included trivia nights, walking tours, bowling, sailing, baseball games, group dinners, karaoke, concerts, meet and greets, cooking classes, and lots of coffee chats. Many of our events are inspired by our summer associates. We ask for suggestions from the incoming summer class before event planning begins each year.

There is generally no minimum billable hour requirement for DWTSurge attorneys.

Do I need to track billable time?

  • Thrive as part of a close-knit team providing high levels of client service
  • Value the flexibility of practicing without a billable hour requirement and without business development obligations
  • Welcome the opportunity to work remotely and on a reduced schedule
  • Are returning to the practice of law after taking some time off
  • Wish to pursue a career in BigLaw while balancing family and other priorities
  • Seek to leverage their mid- to senior-level years of experience

Who would I work with?

DWTSurge attorneys work closely with a supervising partner who assigns and directs their work. You may also work with other attorneys and staff as part of a team dedicated to a particular client workstream. Some DWTSurge positions may involve working closely with a client's in-house legal team as well as DWT colleagues.

What kind of work would I do?

DWTSurge attorneys may be engaged for various kinds of work, depending on their interests, experience, and available projects. For example, some DWTSurge attorneys:

  • Fulfill client secondment needs
  • Support ongoing or recurring transactional or litigation matters as part of dedicated client teams

If there is interest in your application, a DWTSurge recruiter will reach out to you to schedule an interview.

What should I expect of the interview process?

Candidates will have an initial video interview with a DWTSurge recruiter. This initial meeting typically takes 30 minutes. If next steps are taken, candidates will be presented to hiring partners and additional 30-minute video interviews may be scheduled. Some candidates may interview with several DWT partners and attorneys, and may also, on occasion, interview with clients. Transcripts, writing samples, self-assessments, and objective skills exercises may be requested during or after the interview process.

What should I expect of the offer process?

Upon confirmation or completion of your final interview, we will request 2-3 professional references from you. We require that two of your references be supervisors who can speak to your work from previous employers.

We may also ask you to begin compiling a list of clients and matters to start a conflicts check. Offers are contingent upon satisfactorily clearing conflicts, background checks, and reference checks. Offer acceptance requires returning a signed offer letter ahead of the stated offer expiration date.

What kind of benefits will I be eligible for?

Benefits eligibility will vary by position. You will be eligible for health insurance benefits based on the number of hours you are scheduled to work and your DWTSurge recruiter will discuss eligibility with you. Some DWTSurge attorneys may become eligible for additional benefits upon renewal of their contract for a specified, qualifying term.

How am I compensated?

Generally, DWTSurge attorneys are paid on an hourly basis per chargeable hour. Hourly rates vary by position and are commensurate with the attorney's experience and skill level. Some projects may be compensated on a salary or fixed fee basis as well. The DWTSurge Program will work with you to determine compensation on a project-by-project basis. A compensation range may also be included in the job description for specific DWTSurge opportunities.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for professionals who:
  • Value the flexibility of working remotely and collaboratively with a distributed team
  • Seek to build on their prior experience supporting legal teams in-house or in private practice
  • Have experience liaising with clients and/or other high-level stakeholders
  • Are interested in supporting process improvement initiatives and organizing workflows
  • Possess strong organizational, administrative, and interpersonal skills
  • Are eager for the challenges of a large law firm environment, working with large corporate clients

Who would I work with?

DWTSurge staff work closely with a supervising DWT partner or staff manager who assigns and directs their work. You may also work with other DWT attorneys and staff as part of a team dedicated to a particular client workstream. In some cases, you may work closely with a client's in-house legal team and have significant client interaction.

What kind of work would I do?

Every DWTSurge opportunity is different and DWTSurge staff participate in a broad range of work. For example, some DWTSurge staff:
  • Fulfill client secondment needs
  • Support ongoing, high-volume litigation needs for clients in the technology, retail, and logistics industries
  • Support fraud and enforcement litigation workstreams for technology clients
  • Project-manage nationwide regulatory and licensing needs for clients expanding their operations
  • Provide valued assistance to teams in different DWT practice groups, including patent, real property, food + beverage, and more

What should I expect of the application process?

The DWTSurge Program considers each candidate's priorities, preferences, and interests, in order to match them with available opportunities. A resume is required for your application. Some positions may also require additional materials, such as writing samples or work product examples. If there is interest in your application, a DWTSurge recruiter will reach out to you to schedule an interview.

What should I expect of the interview process?

Candidates will have an initial video interview with a DWTSurge recruiter. If next steps are taken, candidates will be presented to hiring managers and additional video interviews may be scheduled. Some candidates may interview with more than one DWT attorney, and some roles may also require an interview with clients. Occasionally, candidates will be asked to complete objective skills exercises, self-assessment forms, or written assignments during the interview process.

What should I expect of the offer process?

Before moving forward with an offer, we will request 2-3 professional references after all interviews have been completed. Generally, we will check your references as a final step before preparing the offer, but in some cases we may check your references after an offer has been made. Candidates will receive the offer letter via email. Offers are contingent upon satisfactorily clearing background checks and reference checks. Offer acceptance requires returning a signed offer letter ahead of the stated offer expiration date.

How flexible is flexible?

Most of our DWTSurge staff have the flexibility to work from home without an expectation that they work in the office regularly. The hours of work will vary by role, and some positions require working certain business hours in specific time zones. The expected hours per week will be noted in the job description for each DWTSurge opportunity, as well as any specifications about the time zones the position will need to maintain.

We can often accommodate staff who have limitations on their schedule due to obligations outside of their work. Our DWTSurge recruiters will work with you to understand what your preferences are to match you with the opportunities that provide the flexibility you need.

How are DWTSurge staff assigned work?

You will be assigned work by your supervising attorney or staff manager. Generally, your scope of work will be narrowly defined. You will likely be supporting one or two workstreams for specific clients. While DWTSurge staff are not frequently diverted to other workstreams, we may occasionally reach out to ask about your interest and availability to take on new assignments.

How am I compensated?

DWTSurge staff are paid on an hourly basis. Hourly rates vary by position and are commensurate with experience and skill level. The DWTSurge Program will work with you to determine compensation rates on a project-by-project basis. A compensation range may also be included in the job description for specific DWTSurge opportunities.

Who can I contact with additional questions?

Please contact Mariah Watson, DWTSurge Recruiting Manager, at Mariah Watson@dwt.com or 202.973.4346 or Ginni Chen, DWTSurge Program Director, at GinniChen@dwt.com or 212.402.4010.

Professional Staff FAQs

When does coverage for health benefits begin?

Medical and dental coverage begins on the first day of the month following an employee's date of hire. If the hire date falls on the first of a month, coverage begins on that day.

Does the firm offer public transit assistance?

The firm does offer assistance with public transportation; however, it varies by office. Professional staff also have the option to set aside pretax dollars to use toward public transit and parking expenses.

Does the firm offer domestic partner benefits?

A domestic partner is offered the same coverage as a spouse, except premiums are paid on an after-tax basis. We offer coverage on medical, dental, and supplemental life insurance for spouses and domestic partners.

What is DWT's commitment to DEI?

Our vision is to foster a culture where all talented individuals—including those who are traditionally underrepresented in the legal profession—can have, and can see, paths to success.

Do you have a paid parental leave policy?

Yes, we have a paid parental leave policy for both exempt and non-exempt employees that provides full pay for up to eight weeks during leave. Professional staff are eligible for this benefit after six months of employment.

Do you provide child and/or elder care options?

There is a discounted backup emergency childcare/eldercare program available and can be used up to 10 days/uses per year. There are copays associated with this benefit. We offer dependent care flexible spending account which allows you to put aside up to $5,000 per household using pre-tax dollars.

Are there educational and training benefits?

All employees receive access to curated in-house training content created within our firm. DWT's subscriptions to PLI and LinkedIn Learning also grant employees access to a wide variety of external learning content. Reimbursement for education expenses is available to employees for preapproved educational opportunities (seminars, workshops, training programs, certification courses, etc.) that apply directly to the staff member's assigned duties. Successful completion is required for reimbursement.

What type of training do you provide for professional staff?

Each employee receives comprehensive technology training during onboarding. Professional staff also have access to an extensive library of on-demand learning content. Additionally, DWT provides a wide range of trainings to keep staff members connected to meaningful professional development opportunities.

How does the review/evaluation process work?

DWT takes a more progressive approach to performance than a standard evaluation process. Two times per year we conduct a check-in, where managers and their staff meet to discuss their successes, challenges, and create SMART goals to achieve in the next six months. These check-ins are memorialized in writing and placed in the employee's personnel file.
