APRIL 18, 2013 – Three attorneys at Davis Wright Tremaine LLP have been selected as among the Top 75 IP Litigators in California by The Daily Journal, a leading statewide legal newspaper.

Recognized in the Daily Journal’s April 17 issue were Eric S. Walters of our San Francisco office and Kelli Sager and Alonzo Wickers IV of our Los Angeles office.

The Daily Journal cited Sager’s copyright and trademark work, including her successful defense of the Los Angeles Times and the Tribune Company against a copyright infringement suit filed by a freelance photographer in 2011. Sager prevailed on a motion to compel arbitration and won a judgment from the arbitrator, who also granted her client’s request for a quarter-million dollars in fees and costs.

Walters’ work on patent, trade secrets, and copyright was cited, with the paper particularly noting his successful defense of a small Oakland, Calif., maker of athletic hydration equipment against a patent infringement suit brought by a much larger competitor. Walters was able to quickly obtain summary judgment of noninfringement, a complete stay on discovery and a recovery of $200,000 in attorney’s fees and costs, as well as an affirmance of the merits on appeal.

Wickers was cited for his copyright, trademark, and publicity rights work, including a much-discussed ruling from the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in favor of his client, the Comedy Central show "South Park." The producers of the show, for whom Wickers has long provided pre-production review, were sued for copyright infringement over the parody use of the viral video "What What in the Butt."
