SEPTEMBER 12, 2014 – Kelli Sager, a media and First Amendment litigator in the Los Angeles office of Davis Wright Tremaine LLP, has been named again to the list of California’s Top 100 Lawyers by the state’s leading legal newspaper.
“The Daily Journal” has been publishing its annual list since 1998, and Sager has been included 12 times, including each of the last five years.
The newspaper singled out her career-long work representing The Los Angeles Times, including a significant victory earlier this year at the state Supreme Court, in which the justices held that the names of police officers involved in shootings must be generally disclosed under state public records law.
Sager was the lead attorney on the case, which was the culmination of years of effort by several DWT lawyers, on behalf of the Times, to overcome police union contentions that the information was protected under state law concerning personnel records, and their claim that release of the information presented a danger to officers.
Sager's practice encompasses all areas of media and entertainment litigation, including defamation, privacy, idea submission, access, prior restraint, shield laws, copyright and trademark law, and Internet law. She has appeared numerous times before the California Supreme Court and the California Courts of Appeal, and before the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.
Earlier this year, The Daily Journal named Sager to its list of California’s Top 75 IP Litigators for the sixth consecutive time, and The Hollywood Reporter named her to its list of Power Lawyers (“the top 100 entertainment attorneys in America”) for the eighth consecutive time.
Chambers USA named Sager one of just three “Star Individuals” nationwide in First Amendment Litigation each of the last four years. Best Lawyers has named her the Los Angeles “Lawyer of the Year” in First Amendment law each of the last three years.
