MARCH 31, 2017 – Recognizing the high regard in which they are held by their peers, three Davis Wright Tremaine partners—Elizabeth McNamara, Portia Moore, and Laura Sack—have been named to the inaugural list of "Women of Influence" by the Coalition of Women's Initiatives in Law and Best Lawyers, with McNamara ranked as an award winner.
The coalition is a nonprofit membership association supporting women's initiatives in law firms and companies of all sizes. More than 120 firms and companies participate. The "Women of Influence" list is the result of the first-ever collaboration between the coalition and Best Lawyers. Women lawyers in private practice and law departments were nominated by coalition members. Further evaluation by Best Lawyers editors led to the selection of just 12 award winners.
McNamara was one of the 12 awardees. A partner in the firm's media and intellectual property practice groups, she regularly handles some of the country's most important cases involving libel, copyright, and First Amendment issues. Best Lawyers named her New York City's 2017 Lawyer of the Year in IP litigation and she received the same honor in 2016 for copyright law.
Portia Moore and Laura Sack were recognized as "Women of Influence" nominees. They are both partners in Davis Wright Tremaine's Employment Services Group, in Seattle and New York, respectively. Sack helped launch a New York branch of the coalition and serves on its board.
In comments published in the Spring 2017 Best Lawyers Business Edition, McNamara said her career was indebted to fellow Davis Wright Tremaine partners Victor Kovner and Laura Handman: "They kindled my passion for First Amendment and media law and taught me that excellence is not divorced from compassion and collegiality."
Asked about her strategies for winning business, she replied: "Providing excellent work should be a given; being knowledgeable and truly caring about your client's business changes the equation."
