DECEMBER 12, 2018 – Davis Wright Tremaine LLP has expanded its industry-leading media and entertainment practice group with the addition of top-ranked litigator Peter Anderson, who joins the firm as a partner in Los Angeles.

Mr. Anderson has been a key player in some of the entertainment industry’s most high-profile litigation matters. His recent successes include winning dismissal of a $25 million copyright suit against Gwen Stefani and others over her song, "Spark the Fire." He is currently defending a copyright infringement action over the introduction to Led Zeppelin’s "Stairway to Heaven."

In addition to his extensive work in music and motion picture copyright cases, Mr. Anderson represents clients in entertainment matters that include breach of contract, tortious interference, trademark, and fraud claims. Over his three-decade career as a copyright and entertainment litigator, which includes representing the prevailing party before the U.S. Supreme Court in the "Rear Window" case, he has secured successful outcomes for the major record companies and music publishers, as well as recording artists such as Britney Spears, T-Pain, Pink, Green Day, Ozzy Osbourne, and many other marquee clients.

“Peter’s arrival represents a major expansion of our national entertainment practice,” said Alexandra Nicholson, chair of the Media, Entertainment, and Intellectual Property group at Davis Wright Tremaine. “He bolsters our exceptional strength in intellectual property litigation and will significantly raise our profile in the music industry.”

Davis Wright Tremaine is the firm of choice for many of the nation’s most prominent media, news, and content companies, with clients that include: A24, A&E, Amazon Studios, Bloomberg, Blumhouse Productions, BuzzFeed, CNN, Columbia Pictures Industries, Comedy Central, Discovery, Facebook, FilmNation, Funny or Die, HBO, Hulu, The Jim Henson Company, Lucky 8, MGM, National Public Radio, NBCUniversal, Netflix, News Corp., Red Bull Media House, Showtime, TNT, Universal Pictures, Viacom Media Networks, VICE Media, Vox Media, and WWE Studios.

The firm’s media and entertainment team is one of the largest in the nation, with 75 lawyers, 20 of them in Los Angeles. Recent recognition for the team includes being named:

  • 2018 Law Firm of the Year in Entertainment Law – Motion Pictures & Television by Best Lawyers and U.S. News, and
  • Practice Group of the Year by Law360 the past two years running.

Davis Wright Tremaine’s media and entertainment group is the only one in the country that is ranked Band 1 by Chambers USA in all three of the major media/entertainment industry centers—L.A., New York, and Washington, D.C. During the past year, the group has secured litigation victories for its clients in four federal circuit courts of appeal and in states that include Florida, Kentucky, Louisiana, and Oregon.

“This group is known nationwide for excellence,” said Mr. Anderson, who previously ran his own firm. “I’m delighted to be able to bring my clients access to the firm’s extraordinary resources and look forward to contributing my expertise to this highly collaborative team.”
