The United States is the world's leader in incarcerations, with more than 1.5 million people held in state and federal prisons. To help reduce those numbers, Oregon lawmakers passed a bill in 2017 reducing sentences for property theft. Greg Chaimov represented the ACLU of Oregon Foundation Inc., Oregon Justice Resource Center, and Oregon Criminal Defense Lawyers Association as amici to defend the constitutionality of this law and, in a unanimous decision, the Oregon Supreme Court upheld it.
