LOS ANGELES – April 15, 2020 – With the California Consumer Protection Act (CCPA) creating a broad range of new challenges for his clients, Spencer Persson wanted to join a firm committed to California and with strong teams in class action litigation, privacy, data security and technology. Today, Davis Wright Tremaine (DWT) announced that Persson has joined the firm's Los Angeles office as partner. His arrival marks the latest step in DWT's systematic growth in 2020 focused on California and the firm's portfolio of market-leading industry practices.

Persson, a leading privacy and data security litigator, has handled more than 20 data privacy matters in the past three years, 11 of them class actions related to data security, including involving stolen credit card information, W-2 and real estate phishing scams, misappropriation of personal and medical information, and data intrusions involving software vulnerabilities. These are part of a broader class action practice that also involves cases in California and across the country related to the Telephone Consumer Protection Act, the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act, California's Invasion of Privacy Act and numerous other consumer and false advertising class actions. A 2004 graduate of the University of Southern California Law School, Persson joins DWT from Norton Rose Fulbright.

"Spencer has all the classic DWT attributes of entrepreneurialism, teamwork and creative, technically excellent legal skills, and he brings tremendous capabilities to round out our team," said Nancy Libin, co-chair of DWT's Technology + Privacy & Security practice. "He and David Gossett, who oversaw all litigation at the FCC and joined our D.C. office in January, bring geographic and substantive depth to our existing teams to serve our clients across the country. We have seen increased activity in health and student related privacy issues, not to mention the targeting of businesses that have transitioned to working remotely. Spencer and David are well positioned to help our clients with any enforcement or litigation matters that arise as a result."

"CCPA provisions will significantly increase the amount of civil litigation in privacy and security matters," said Persson. "In addition to having a strong national litigation team with notable strength in class actions, DWT has leading national practices representing industries that will likely be targeted, including technology, financial services and health care. As states across the country move towards enacting CCPA-type provisions, it is incredibly valuable to have these national teams to support our clients."

Persson is the ninth lateral partner to join DWT since January. DWT now has more than 120 lawyers in California. Its growth has been focused on its national industry practices in technology, media/entertainment, healthcare, financial services, restaurants/food and beverage, and energy, all of which have a strong presence in California.
