On June 4, 2019, Davis Wright Tremaine and partners Pacific Family Business Institute, Cascadia Capital, and Moss Adams hosted another of its Family Business Legacy Series. This session focused on innovation and reinvention in the Family Business and featured Daniel Baty, the founder of Emeritus Corporation, one of the largest operators of assisted living communities in the United States, and current Chairman of Columbia Pacific Management.

Dan’s two sons, Brandon and Stan, are officers and owners of Columbia Pacific. Dan spoke about the decisions that led him and his sons to found Columbia Pacific in 1989 as well as to grow and sell a series of portfolio companies. Their businesses now span from local wineries to hospitals in Europe and Asia to their latest investment in healthcare in Africa. Dan stated that a large part of his success is in overseeing the businesses, but not running the operations of them. In looking to the future, Dan identified a focus on preparing the next generation and in assisting his sons to take the family-owned businesses in the direction they see best.

We look forward to our next Legacy Series event, scheduled for September 24.
