Educating Employers to Hire America's Heroes

What does it take to lead 40 soldiers during a yearlong deployment in Afghanistan? What skills are involved with the loading and unloading of a C-17 aircraft during hundreds (perhaps thousands) of trips across the globe carrying millions of pounds of equipment in support of those soldiers? Most employers who interview veterans for job openings don't know. That's where Hire America's Heroes comes in.

Helping Haitians Obtain Temporary Protected Status

After the earthquake in Haiti in January 2010, the Department of Homeland Security halted deportations of Haitians who were living in the U.S. illegally and announced the availability of temporary protected status, which allows Haitians to live legally in the U.S. for up to 18 months. One of our attorneys is among the volunteers who have helped more than 35,000 Haitians apply for TPS since January.

U.S. Supreme Court Upholds First Amendment in Stevens Case

Davis Wright Tremaine’s First Amendment attorneys helped win a case that the New York Times had called “The next great First Amendment battle in the Supreme Court.” In April 2010, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a federal appeals court’s decision not to convict Robert J. Stevens of violating federal laws relating to the sale of materials that depict animal cruelty.

In its 8-1 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court called the case against Stevens a “free-floating test for First Amendment coverage” that was “startling and dangerous.”

DWT’s Robert Corn-Revere and Jeffrey L. Fisher helped lead attorney Patricia A. Millett defend Robert Stevens pro bono.
