Bartell Drugs, the nation’s oldest drugstore chain, has been family-owned and operated since 1890. Dave Barber, Manager of Bartell-Barber Family Investments, President of Bartell-Barber Family Council, and husband of the company’s Vice Chairman and Treasurer Jean Bartell Barber, discussed how the company has dealt with the issues of governance, formation of boards, and succession planning. Mr. Barber offered a unique perspective on the role family plays in running a business as well as techniques for successful transitions.
