Family governance is essential to effective business succession. Studies show family dysfunction causes a 70% failure rate when business transition from the first generation to the next. Most business owners focus heavily on preparing the business for the family, but few focus on preparing the family for business. The results are most often economically devastating and personally traumatic. But there are exceptions. What do these businesses that thrive do to beat the odds? How can we, as advisors, help clients and their families succeed? What personal capacities and capabilities must we develop to become truly trusted advisors? These are just a few of the questions we explored as we look at the forces of power and love in family business.

About Matthew Wesley
Matthew works with families and their leaders to build capacities that will sustain family wealth across generations. This work involves the development of core skill sets necessary to secure the human, social and cultural well-being of families that in turn forms the basis for family success over time. Before establishing The Wesley Group, Matt was a respected estate planning attorney with over twenty years of experience in both Seattle and the Bay Area. Matt holds a J.D. from Stanford Law School and a Masters of Divinity from Fuller Theological Seminary.
