This was the first in a series of programs designed to share knowledge among professionals serving owners and operators of family businesses, and to build a strong network committed to family business successes in Oregon. The programs showcase Northwest family businesses sharing their stories and professional perspectives on current issues affecting family businesses, plus the opportunity to network with other service providers.
In this first program of the series, we heard from 4th generation leader Jim Mark, CEO of Melvin Mark Companies. Founded in 1945, Melvin Mark Companies manages and leases numerous Portland-area and SW Washington commercial properties, totaling more than three million square feet. For more than 35 years, the company has invested not only in many of Portland's historic downtown buildings, but also modern high rises and office campuses, revitalizing the downtown Portland area.
While the company's profile and offerings have expanded, the group and its partners have maintained their commitment to community involvement at all levels of the company. In 2011 the company earned the Portland Business Journal Corporate Philanthropy Award for a midsize company.
As the fourth generation of the family to take the helm of the business, Jim Mark continues to carry on his father's commitment to the community by investing time and resources in expanding economic opportunity throughout the region.
