Establishing a board of directors in a family-owned enterprise—particularly including outside directors—can be intimidating. The family may worry about loss of family control and direction. At the same time, many family business owners have found that an effective board of board of directors is critical to the business's ability to survive and prosper.

What is (or should be) the role of the board of directors in a family business? Why have independent directors? What is the right mix of family and independent board members? What makes a great family business director?

In this series event, we hear from three board members of Pacific Northwest family-owned businesses:

  • Jim Warjone - Chairman Emeritus of the board of directors of Port Blakely Companies and current board member of Uwajimaya Inc., Nelson Legacy Group, Christensen Inc., and Idaho Asphalt Supply.
  • Mae Numata - Lead Director of the board of directors for Uwajimaya Inc. and also serves on the Boards of Columbia Bank, GeoEngineers Inc., and Mutual of Enumclaw.
  • Stan McCammon - CEO and Board Member of the Joshua Green Corporation and also serves on the Board of Sellen Construction Company.
