Jeremy Chase is an experienced litigator with a passion for counseling content creators on complex media, intellectual property, and internet law. Jeremy has successfully litigated cases in both state and federal courts involving defamation, copyright, trademark, right-of-publicity, invasion of privacy, SLAPP, reporters' shield laws, prior restraint, open records statutes, access to courts, and all manner of news-gathering issues. Jeremy represents book, magazine, and newspaper publishers; television networks, radio stations, movie studios, and documentary film companies; and a wide array of Internet content and service providers, including the operators of blogs and other online publications; streaming platforms; and the publishers of news, health, technology, and travel websites. Jeremy also has extensive experience representing colleges and universities in libel and intellectual property related matters.

Jeremy prides himself on understanding his clients' businesses and shapes legal strategies to fit their competitive goals. Adopting a practical strategy through years of working in newsrooms, Jeremy's focus is on shepherding content through the legal process so that truthful, newsworthy, and otherwise important content can reach the public at large.

Practice Highlights

Copyright litigation

Handled dozens of copyright infringement cases for clients such as ABC, Amazon, Bleacher Report, BroadwayHD, CNN, Discovery, Turner, Sony Music, Universal Music, Simon & Schuster, Penguin Random House; authors Gillian Flynn and M.L. Stedman; and the estates of Ernest Hemingway, Jack Kerouac, Truman Capote, and Arthur C. Clarke.

Freedom of information and access litigation

The public has a right to know what its government is doing, and Jeremy regularly aids journalists and documentary film clients in shining a light on those activities through freedom of information requests such as challenging the NYPD's withholding of officer disciplinary records, and access petitions such as the ongoing efforts to gain access to the criminal and civil trials of former President Donald Trump.

Advising startup and early-stage companies

In addition to his litigation practice, Jeremy counsels startup and early-stage companies on a range of legal issues including privacy and security, intellectual property, and general corporate matters. Among his various clients, Jeremy has served as coordinating counsel for a major tour and activity company from its early stages through acquisition, and currently serves as coordinating counsel for a text-to-park SaaS company, an HR/procurement SaaS company, a financial benefits provider, and others.
