Jeremy Chase is an experienced litigator with a passion for counseling content creators on media, intellectual property, and internet law. He has successfully litigated cases in both state and federal courts involving libel, invasion of privacy, SLAPP, copyright, trademark, right-of-publicity, reporters' shield laws, and news-gathering issues. Jeremy represents book, magazine, and newspaper publishers; television networks; record labels; documentary film companies; and a wide array of Internet content and service providers, including the operators of blogs and other online publications; streaming platforms; and the publishers of news, health, technology, and travel websites.

Jeremy seeks to understand clients' businesses thoroughly and shapes legal strategies to fit their competitive goals. As but one example, Jeremy counsels media clients such as The New York Post, Vox Media, Slate, Vice, Rolling Stone, Straus Newspapers, SB Nation, Slate, Quartz, Defector, and A&E on all manner of prepublication issues. Adopting a practical strategy through years of working in newsrooms, Jeremy's focus is on getting truthful and newsworthy information out to the public, and he prides himself on shepherding content through the legal process for publication.

Practice Highlights

Copyright litigation

Handled dozens of copyright infringement cases for clients such as ABC, Bleacher Report, CNN, Discovery, Turner, Sony Music, Universal Music, Simon & Schuster, Penguin Random House; authors Gillian Flynn and M.L. Stedman; and the estates of Ernest Hemingway, Jack Kerouac, Truman Capote, and Arthur C. Clarke.

Freedom of information and access litigation

The public has a right to know what its government is doing, and Jeremy regularly aids journalists and documentary film clients in shining a light on those activities through freedom of information requests and access petitions. Representing The New York Post, Jeremy won a FOIL lawsuit against Mayor Bill de Blasio seeking withheld communications with a private consultant, whom the Mayor wrongfully deemed an “agent of the city.”

Advising startup and early-stage companies

In addition to his litigation practice, Jeremy counsels startup and early-stage companies on a range of legal issues including privacy and security, intellectual property, and general corporate matters. Among his various clients, Jeremy has served as coordinating counsel for a major tour and activity company from its early stages through acquisition and maintains his role as their U.S.-based counsel.
