LOS ANGELES, JULY 13, 2011—In its fifth annual list of the most influential entertainment attorneys in America, The Hollywood Reporter (THR) has recognized three attorneys from Davis Wright Tremaine LLP – Nancy Derwin-Weiss, Kelli Sager, and Alonzo Wickers IV – to its “2011 Power Lawyers” list.
THR compiles the list through nominations from the community and their own research on deals closed, cases won and clients signed. Only U.S.-based attorneys are eligible, and no full-time law professors or in-house studio or network lawyers are considered. The publication recognizes just 100 attorneys in their final list, which they break down into four categories: talent dealmakers, litigation specialists, corporate dealmakers, and troubleshooters.
Ms. Derwin-Weiss, one of only two women recognized in the corporate dealmakers category, received praise from the publication for counsel of studio clients like Summit, Participant Media, and CBS Films “on a range of cutting-edge issues, including contests, sweepstakes, social media advertising, smartphone app development and user-generated content.”
Ms. Sager, who has been recognized every year since the inaugural list in 2007, once again received high praise from THR in the litigation category, where they described her as “perhaps the preeminent Los Angeles-based media law specialist.” The publication applauded her work for clients such as CBS, E!, A&E, Electronic Arts, and the Los Angeles Times.
Wickers, new to the publication’s list, gained THR’s attention in the litigation category for his pre-broadcast work for clients like Comedy Central and HBO. Calling him “the First Amendment specialist on call 24/7 to tell networks...what they can and can’t broadcast,” THR mentioned his important role in quick preapproval of the controversial jokes and celebrity skewering for Comedy Central’s South Park.
