JUNE 23, 2014 – Karen Henry, an associate in the Los Angeles office of Davis Wright Tremaine LLP, has been named to the second annual “Hot List” by the publishing and research company Lawyers of Color.
The list honors early- to mid-career attorneys of color who are excelling in the profession.
“We are thrilled to see Karen receive this much-deserved recognition,” said Mary (Missy) Haas, partner-in-charge at Davis Wright Tremaine’s Los Angeles office. “Karen’s great talent has been matched with tremendous resolve, and we couldn’t be more proud of her service to our clients and her contributions to the community.”
Nominations from mentors, peers, and colleagues were accepted and evaluated for the list, according to Lawyers of Color. The selection committee also conducted its own research to identify attorneys with noteworthy accomplishments, especially those active in legal pipeline initiatives.
Henry first came to the attention of Davis Wright Tremaine LLP at a job fair organized by the National Black Law Students Association. She was attending law school in Los Angeles while working full-time as a courtroom clerk. She later joined the firm’s renowned media/First Amendment and commercial litigation practice groups, where she is now a senior associate working with many major national clients.
Earlier this year, Henry was named a “Rising Star” in Southern California by the lawyer-ranking organization Super Lawyers.
In addition to her successful work on behalf of paying clients, Henry has received a number of honors for her public service and pro bono work over the years. Last year she participated in a mentoring program, sponsored by the Black Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles, at a high school in South Central L.A., near where she grew up.
“We were there to show these students that there are avenues available to them,” says Henry, “and that their current circumstances don’t have to define their future.”
