JANUARY 29, 2016 – In rankings released by World Trademark Review, Davis Wright Tremaine LLP was recognized as one of the leading firms in the country in trademark law and our attorneys individually recognized as some of the top professionals in the field.

The annual list, known as the "WTR 1000," is the only ranking to focus exclusively on trademark law. The list is compiled based on factors such as depth of expertise, market presence, and favorable reviews from clients and fellow attorneys.

As a firm, Davis Wright Tremaine was recognized as a national leader—one of just 27 firms in the country to receive the recognition this year.

The publication recognized DWT partner Roxanne Elings as a leader in three of the four national practice areas evaluated by WTR: anti-counterfeiting, enforcement and litigation, and prosecution and strategy. Elings was the only attorney in the country to be recognized as a leader in all three of those areas.

In addition to its national rankings, Davis Wright Tremaine received recognition regionally. Davis Wright Tremaine was one of just two firms to receive WTR’s top ranking (Gold) in Washington state. WTR praised the team, saying it "performs adroitly across all industries."

WTR listed Cindy Caditz as a leading individual in Washington, describing her as "a first port of call for difficult cases," and saying she "provides excellent, prompt and commercially focused advice to suit your needs and objectives." Stuart Dunwoody was also listed. WTR said he "has great communication skills, provides excellent advice and is a calm and resourceful negotiator."

In New York, Davis Wright Tremaine was named one of the top eight firms in prosecution and strategy, and one of the top dozen firms in enforcement and litigation. WTR said the firm’s New York office has "significant depth" and "caters to the client’s every need," adding: "The group is excellent, efficient and possessed of fabulous substantive knowledge….It has a deeper understanding of the law than the vast majority of its competitors."

Individual DWT lawyers ranked in New York include Alexandra Nicholson, described as a "trusted counsellor," and Elings, whose "dedication to client satisfaction and indefatigable pursuit of their best interests make her a cut above the rest. [Elings’] understanding of counterfeiting and its worldwide reach allows her to develop highly innovative methods for combating it." Also recognized was "the indomitable" Marcia Paul. Said WTR: "Besides being technically brilliant, [Paul] is a fearsome lawyer and litigator…However, she doesn’t pointlessly contest issues to death; she is highly pragmatic and knows when to settle."

In Oregon, DWT was recognized as one of a small group of top trademark practices. WTR praised our Portland office for its "personalised service and deep-dive IP expertise." Sheila Fox Morrison was singled out as an "excellent, well-known practitioner with a sharp focus on marks."

In our D.C. office, David Silverman was recognized as a "recommended expert." "He dispenses sage counsel to top-dollar enterprises," said WTR, "…on everything they could possibly need to know about, from IP to regulatory issues."
