JUNE 20, 2019Rachel Strom, a partner in the media and entertainment practice of Davis Wright Tremaine LLP, has won a Rising Star award from the New York Law Journal, which recognizes “the region’s most promising lawyers 40 and younger.”

Strom will be honored, along with the other Rising Stars, at a gala event in October.

Strom handles high-stakes litigation on behalf of many leading media clients—both established and emerging. She also provides pre-publication/pre-broadcast counseling for some of the industry’s most innovative, provocative content.

Last year, Strom was one of just four lawyers nationwide to be named a Rising Star in media & entertainment law by Law360.

Her many accomplishments this past year include the following:

  • On behalf of major national news media, she successfully argued for the public release of search warrants that federal authorities used to raid the offices of lawyer Michael Cohen. Front-page stories resulted from the court-ordered release of the information in March 2019.
  • She is helping defend the producers of “Who is America?”, the political satire television series created by Sacha Baron Cohen, against defamation and related claims brought by former Republication senate candidate Roy Moore and his wife, Kayla Moore. The team has won transfer of the case to New York.
  • On behalf of HBO, NBC, and other defendants, Strom won dismissal of a copyright infringement suit arising from the 2014 Scarlett Johansson movie, “Lucy.” Strom will continue as lead counsel for the 2nd Circuit appeal.

Strom provides ongoing pre-publication review for a host of new media clients, including Vice News, Refinery 29, GroupNine Media, and podcast producers Gimlet, Luminary, and Pushkin Industries.
