NOV. 28, 2022 – The chief judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit has appointed Caesar Kalinowski IV, a senior associate in the Seattle office of Davis Wright Tremaine LLP, to be an appellate lawyer representative to the court's judicial conference.
Appellate lawyer representatives serve three-year terms as the official attorney liaisons to the court, during which they participate in meetings throughout the circuit, coordinate activities with district lawyer representatives, suggest changes to the rules, and attend and participate in the 9th Circuit Judicial Conference.
"One need only look at the roster of current representatives to see what a remarkable honor this is for such an early-career lawyer," said Rochelle Wilcox, vice-chair of the appellate litigation practice at Davis Wright Tremaine. "Chief Judge Murguia's selection of Caesar is a testament to the outstanding reputation Caesar has already established for integrity, dedication, and excellence."
Kalinowski plays a key role in the work of Davis Wright Tremaine's renowned First Amendment litigation team, which he joined after clerking on the 9th Circuit. He recently argued and won a decision from the Washington Court of Appeals in the first appellate case addressing the state's recently enacted uniform anti-SLAPP law. He has also filed briefs in the U.S. Supreme Court and circuits around the country in cases involving First Amendment rights for prisoners, press, commercial advertisers, and political advocates.
Kalinowski, a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, received his B.A. from American Military University and his J.D. from University of Washington School of Law, where he earned the Dean's Medal. He served as a judicial law clerk for the Honorable Richard C. Tallman on the 9th Circuit and Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court of Review.
