SEPT. 23, 2024 – Recognizing the firm's leadership in technology litigation, consumer class actions, white collar defense, and other key practices, Law360 has named Davis Wright Tremaine LLP a Powerhouse in the state of Washington, the firm's second straight year winning the honor.
In an article highlighting the firm's accomplishments from the past year, Law360 put special focus on DWT's close partnership with Amazon and Microsoft and the firm's success defending these longtime clients, and many others, in cutting-edge cases involving data privacy.
"With longevity comes trust and a deep understanding of a company's internal workings that allows the firm to serve the client's broader goals," Wendy Kearns, DWT's Seattle partner-in-charge, told Law360.
Jaime Drozd, who co-chairs DWT's national litigation practice, told Law360 that much of what the firm has achieved for clients in Washington serves as a microcosm of its achievements nationally.
On behalf of a leading Washington healthcare client, for example, DWT won dismissal earlier this year of a class action lawsuit arising from the use of a browser tracking tool on the client's website. This tool has become a focus of strong interest from the plaintiffs' bar around the country and DWT is currently handling more than a dozen similar cases in California.
Among the other significant achievements highlighted by Law360 was DWT's success defending Changpeng Zhao, founder of the global cryptocurrency exchange Binance Holdings Ltd.
Mark Bartlett, a white collar defense attorney and former federal prosecutor, played a key role in negotiating Zhao's plea deal and sentencing agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice and other agencies. Bartlett also spearheaded a campaign to generate letters of support, which helped secure a sentence for Zhao that was far below what the government sought.
As noted by Law360, DWT's expertise in crypto, tech, and financial services—practices not always found at firms doing white collar defense—also played a role in the successful outcome.
