DECEMBER 11, 2025 — For the second time in three years, Davis Wright Tremaine LLP has been recognized by Bloomberg Law as a national leader in pro bono innovation.

The firm was honored for its groundbreaking work on behalf of foster children in Oregon and its successful defense of international journalists targeted during the first Trump administration.

Now in its fourth year, Bloomberg Pro Bono Innovators recognizes organizations "going above and beyond in delivering impactful pro bono work." Fewer than ten law firms nationwide were named to this year's list.

Lead attorneys on the Oregon foster care matter were William D. Miner and P. Andrew McStay, Jr., who helped secure a landmark settlement with the state of Oregon requiring significant improvements to the state's dangerously deficient foster care system. The DWT team worked in concert with co-counsel at the nonprofits A Better Childhood and Disability Rights Oregon to successfully litigate this years-long class action on behalf of all Oregon foster care youth.

Said Miner and McStay in their interview with Bloomberg: "There can hardly be any community in more need of protection than children in foster care. But for too long, there was no effective, ongoing advocate to look out for the interests of this vulnerable population and hold the state of Oregon accountable and responsible for its handling of them. Our litigation changed that."

Burt Braverman was the lead counsel in representing nine Voice of America journalists who were maligned as potential spies and unlawfully forced out of the U.S. Agency for Global Media in 2020. Together with a DWT team that included immigration partner Diane Butler, government contracts partner Jonathan DeMella, and employment associate Lindsay Samuel, Braverman secured settlements for each of these journalists that included reinstatement, back pay, and benefits.

Braverman told Bloomberg: "These unjustified terminations were not only a violation of the journalists' individual rights; they were a violation of the statutory firewall that has long protected VOA from executive branch interference in its journalistic operations. And they recklessly undermined the decades-long VOA mission of providing objective information and promoting democratic values in countries around the world that have a dire shortage of both."
