OCT. 29, 2026 – On behalf of five nonprofit research and advocacy organizations and two local government parties, Davis Wright Tremaine LLP has filed a pro bono amicus brief with the United States Supreme Court in the case of Viramontes v. Cook County, Ill., addressing the constitutionality of laws regulating assault weapons.

As our team explains in its brief, the Second Amendment is no bar to laws banning military-derived semiautomatic assault rifles—among the most dangerous firearms available—from civilian use.

Amici represented by DWT in the matter are the Violence Policy Center, the Illinois Alliance to Prevent Gun Violence, Kids Above All, the RIFL Coalition, the Alvin H. Baum Family Fund, as well as the City of Highland Park, Ill., where a mass shooting with an AR-15-style rifle took place in 2022, and the Lake County State's Attorney's Office, which prosecuted the shooter in that case.

The DWT team is led by appellate litigation partners David Gossett and Thaila Sundaresan, along with associates Alexandra Perloff-Giles, Azeezat Adeleke, and Monica Gibbons.
