Under Washington’s new Paid Family Medical Leave (PFML) law, eligible employees will be entitled to up to 12 weeks of paid leave for their own serious health condition (medical leave) or for family care (family leave), up to 16 weeks combined family and medical leave, and up to two additional weeks for certain pregnancy complications. Starting January 2, 2020, employees may apply to the state for PFML benefits.

Notice Requirements

Covered employers are required to post a notice regarding the PFML program. The Employment Security Department (ESD) has released the required PFML notice, which can be found here. Employers should post the PFML notice in a place customarily used to post other employment-related notices.

The notice is available in multiple languages, but currently only available online in English. Additionally, ESD is providing employers with an optional paystub insert that is available online in 14 different languages. Employers who provide the optional paystub inserts are still required to post the PFML notice.

Online Benefits Calculator

Additionally, ESD has added an online calculator to estimate the weekly benefit for eligible employees. Employers planning to offer supplemental benefits may want to utilize the online calculator to estimate the amount of supplemental benefits offered to eligible employees.

The PFML Benefits Calculator is available here.
