The move towards greater adoption of electronic health records and electronic health information exchange comes with a variety of challenges, not the least of which are new issues surrounding privacy and security. This workshop focused on the myriad of privacy and security issues raised by participation in the Meaningful Use program, offering practical strategies for HIPAA compliance. Topics included patient access to EHR information under Meaningful Use, and how this relates to the right of access under HIPAA, how the adoption of certified EHR technology impacts compliance with the Security Rule, and how health information exchange for purposes of Meaningful Use will require a number of steps for compliance with HIPAA.

This presentation discussed:

  • Analyze the impact of the adoption of certified EHR technology on compliance with the HIPAA Security Rule
  • Identify the difference requirements of Meaningful Use and HIPAA with respect to patient access to medical record information
  • Analyze the HIPAA challenges of meeting the Meaningful Use health information exchange requirements
