Technology giants like Facebook and Google have been criticized in the media for overusing users’ data. In the last three years, many countries and states have been working to protect their citizens’ privacy by enacting laws—the most sweeping among them being the GDPR in the EU and the CPRA in California and CDPA in Virginia. Have these rules changed the way people are targeted in advertising? Have they decreased companies’ use of your data? What about children’s privacy—with the rise of kidfluencers and TikTok, is COPPA strong enough to protect kids?

DWT associate Kara Trowell was among the panel of legal experts examining these issues. The panel presented an analysis of the current state of privacy protection in relation to the advertising and marketing industry, and discussed the implications around adults and children, as well as the direction the industry is heading.
