Food Venture Financing Trends

  • Pitchbook's 2021 Annual Foodtech Report notes that foodtech companies raised over $39 billion in 2021. Over half of the capital was invested in online grocers and ecommerce marketplaces.
  • Sanzo, an Asian-inspired sparkling water emerging brand, announced that it raised $10 million in its Series A round, which was led by CircleUp Growth Partners.
  • Kraft Heinz and TheNotCompany, a foodtech startup, announced the creation of a joint venture—The Kraft Heinz Not Company—to develop plant-based products. The joint venture will utilize TheNotCompany's technology in plant-based formulation and Kraft Heinz's brand and portfolio.
  • Kerry Group announced that it acquired two biotech companies for approximately 200 million euros. Kerry plans to use the technology from the two companies to produce new ingredients through sustainable fermentation.


CPG Corporate Venture and Private Equity Funds

This week's featured program is Zentis Ventures.

  • Zentis, a German company, founded in 1893, produces fruit-based spreads such as jams and jellies, and confectionery products for the retail channel, and also supplies fruit preparations to dairy, bakery and confectionery manufacturers.
  • Zentis launched its venture capital arm called Zentis Ventures in 2019.
  • To date, Zentis Ventures has acquired ownership stake in the following Berlin-based companies:
    • Bettr Egg, a manufacturer of vegan (plant-based) egg
    • Dörrwerk, a food waste company that produces healthy snacks intended to save wastage of fruits and vegetables.
    • Haferkater, a start-up producing vegan porridge products.
