Michael Maher is a strategic legal advisor and trusted partner to owners, operators, and investors across the food, beverage, agriculture, and hospitality industries.

With over a decade of in-house experience as general counsel to leading wine and hospitality businesses, Michael brings a practical business perspective to advising his clients. In addition to his direct experience working in the industries he serves, he holds a graduate degree in wine business management and has been an active participant in domestic and international industry trade associations throughout his career. Applying his deep industry knowledge and experience, Michael helps clients identify pragmatic, efficient, and creative legal solutions that align with their business objectives.

Michael's legal practice encompasses a broad range of commercial matters, including advising businesses on strategic commercial partnerships and contracts; on acquisition, disposition, and merger transactions; in assessing, structuring, and negotiating real estate transactions; and in navigating complex regulatory operating environments.

Michael guides businesses throughout their lifecycle, from startup through growth, scale, and eventual exit or multigenerational succession as a family business. He acts as principal outside counsel to a diverse group of businesses, advising on the wide range of issues that arise as businesses develop and grow.

Practice Highlights

Winery acquisition

Represented original founder and financial partners in re-purchase of Patz & Hall Winery back from Ste. Michelle Wine Estates and its private equity owner.

Principal outside counsel

Serves as principal outside counsel to the wineries of the Harlan family, including Harlan Estate, BOND, Promontory, and The Mascot.

Vineyard lease

Represented Jackson Family Wines on 200+ acre vineyard development lease and purchase option transaction on the Sonoma Coast.
