Stacey Sprenkel is a thought leader in the fast-changing environmental, social, and governance space. She combines ethics, compliance, anti-corruption, and sustainability expertise with a background in human rights—offering clients a comprehensive suite of services aimed at proactive risk mitigation. She also conducts internal investigations when issues do arise.
Stacey leads DWT's ESG and Sustainability practice and has a robust ethics, compliance, and risk management practice. She supports clients and DWT teams across industries and geographies in assessing compliance risks associated with new business lines, marketing practices, strategic transactions, and evolving enforcement priorities, and in developing practical, prioritized action plans to address those risks and add business value.
Stacey helps clients conduct risk assessments, materiality and double materiality assessments, saliency assessments, gap analyses, compliance program maturity analyses, and benchmarking reviews. Known for her practical approach, she helps companies of all sizes develop and enhance their ESG strategies and compliance programs, with an eye toward achieving business objectives while mitigating risks. Stacey helps clients achieve their sustainability-related goals while minimizing litigation and enforcement risk.
Stacey is a trusted advisor to boards, C-suites, and legal and compliance teams. She has represented industry leaders across sectors, from technology to logistics, food + beverage, retail, professional services, manufacturing, and healthcare. She conducts due diligence on high-profile transactions, supports institutional investors in developing risk mitigation strategies across their portfolios, assists companies with supply chain and other third-party risk management, and counsels clients on day-to-day compliance-related matters. Stacey's experience is global as she has counseled companies across nearly every continent.
When issues arise, Stacey leads internal investigations into issues involving bribery, kickbacks, embezzlement, insider trading, self-dealing, accounting fraud, economic espionage, and healthcare fraud. She has represented clients in SEC and DOJ investigations and handled complex commercial litigation involving civil RICO, False Claims Act, and securities and antitrust matters.
Named to the Daily Journal's 2018 list of the Top 40 California Lawyers Under 40 and recognized among the world's top compliance lawyers by the C5 Group's Women in Compliance Awards, Stacey is well regarded as an experienced ESG, compliance, and risk management thought leader. She is a regular speaker on the ESG circuit, focusing on achieving ESG objectives while mitigating risk. Stacey earned a Certificate in ESG & Sustainable Capitalism from the University of California, Berkeley Law School and a Certificate in Sustainable Business Management from the University of Cambridge Institute of Sustainability Leadership.
Her pro bono work includes advising on anti-corruption efforts in Africa and collaborating with the Northern California Innocence Project. Stacey is also a veterans' rights champion involved in high-profile impact cases and proposed legislation. Outside of her daily practice, Stacey prioritizes the development of young lawyers including working parents and other caregivers navigating the challenges of combining a demanding career with responsibilities at home.
