OCTOBER 18, 2019 Rachel Strom, a partner in the media and entertainment practice group at Davis Wright Tremaine LLP, was named a 2019 Rising Star by the New York Law Journal, which annually recognizes the New York region's most promising lawyers under 40.

The NYLJ said Strom's "passion and resourcefulness in upholding the speech rights of her clients has won her tremendous loyalty—from companies both established and emerging. She knows her clients' business, their risk tolerance, and their priorities, so she can be a true counselor and offer service particularized to them."

Ms. Strom has played a central role in a number of recent, high-profile media litigation matters. For example:

  • On behalf of AP, CBS, CNN, and others, she successfully argued for the public release of search warrants that federal authorities used to raid the offices of lawyer Michael Cohen.
  • She helped defend Showtime in a suit filed by Denise Shull, an author and performance coach for Wall Street traders, who claims that a character in the hit series "Billions" is based on her and that the show infringes on the copyright in her book. Shull's complaint was recently dismissed.
  • Also on behalf of Showtime and comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, Strom is helping defend against a $95 million defamation suit filed by former Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore over his appearance on the show "Who Is America?"
  • On behalf of HBO, NBC, and other defendants, Strom won dismissal of a copyright infringement suit arising from the 2014 Scarlett Johansson movie, "Lucy."

In addition to helping lead high-stakes litigation matters for traditional media clients, Strom provides pre-publication review for a host of important new media companies, including Vice News, Refinery 29, and Gimlet Media.
