NOV. 10, 2020 – With global cybercriminals increasingly preying on companies and their customers, Bonnie MacNaughton is a national leader in helping clients fight back. Her record of innovation and success in this highly specialized area has earned her a spot on the National Law Journal's 2020 list of Litigation Trailblazers.

MacNaughton works to protect her clients' brands and reputations. On behalf of some of the world's most-recognized technology companies, she deploys a range of sophisticated techniques—at scale—to identify elusive cybercriminals and halt their damaging activities. She has negotiated settlements in the tens of millions of dollars and obtained numerous injunctions shutting down illegal activity.

MacNaughton honed her craft as the head of Microsoft's North American digital crimes unit. In that role she annually led hundreds of piracy and cybercrime actions and investigations. She also spent 14 years as a federal prosecutor.

In 2014, she brought her skills to Davis Wright Tremaine as a partner in the firm's Seattle office. She has helped leading clients combat a wide array of malicious activities, including "tech support" scams, malvertising, and myriad other schemes in which internet bad actors, often operating overseas, aim to steal corporate and customer data, divert funds, abuse corporate brands, and/or impersonate companies to gain access to victims.

"This was a niche practice area when Bonnie first entered it two decades ago," said Rob Maguire, chair of the litigation group at David Wright Tremaine. "Now it's crucial to every company with a digital presence. Bonnie has the rare combination of technical, criminal, and civil legal expertise that these difficult cases demand."

MacNaughton's passion for her clients' interests is matched by her dedication to advancing women in the legal profession. She is a founder of Davis Wright Tremaine's women's affinity group and co-led the creation of Elevate—a series of conferences that provide early-career women lawyers at the firm with a deep dive into the mechanics of advancing in the world of BigLaw.
